Glutathione has earned the label “master antioxidant” in integrative medicine circles, and patients in Wellington, Weston, and throughout South Florida are increasingly asking about injectable forms. But what does the science actually support, and why might an injection be preferable to an oral supplement?
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is synthesized in every cell of the body and plays central roles in antioxidant defense, detoxification (particularly in the liver), immune function, and the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis. A comprehensive review published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta described glutathione synthesis and its regulatory mechanisms as fundamental to cellular homeostasis across virtually every tissue type (Lu, BBA, 2013).
Here is the challenge: oral glutathione is extensively degraded in the gastrointestinal tract by peptidases and gamma-glutamyltransferase before it can be absorbed intact. A pharmacokinetic study published in European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that a single oral dose of glutathione did not produce a measurable increase in circulating glutathione levels in healthy subjects (Witschi et al., Eur J Clin Pharmacol, 1992). This finding has been a key driver behind the interest in injectable forms.
Some newer oral formulations—including liposomal and acetylated glutathione—have attempted to address this bioavailability limitation with varying degrees of success. However, intramuscular injection bypasses the GI tract entirely, delivering glutathione directly into tissue where it can be absorbed into the bloodstream without degradation.
At The Longevity Center FL, patients who ask about glutathione injections typically fall into several categories: those undergoing chelation or detoxification protocols who want to support the body’s antioxidant and detoxification pathways, patients with documented oxidative stress markers, individuals seeking skin health support (glutathione has been studied in the dermatological literature for its potential effects on melanin synthesis), and those who have tried oral glutathione without perceived benefit.
A broad review described glutathione’s role not only as an antioxidant but as a critical cofactor in detoxification pathways, particularly the conjugation reactions that prepare toxins for excretion (Pizzorno, Integrative Medicine, 2014). Supporting glutathione status may be particularly relevant for patients with high environmental exposure burden.
At The Longevity Center FL, glutathione injections are offered as part of a physician-guided wellness plan. Dr. Kosubevsky evaluates your clinical context—including liver function, oxidative stress markers, and current therapies—before recommending glutathione supplementation in any form. It is not offered as a standalone cosmetic treatment.
Residents of Wellington (approximately 35 minutes) and Weston (approximately 50 minutes) can access our West Palm Beach clinic conveniently via the Turnpike.
Glutathione injection is a compounded preparation and has not been FDA-approved for any specific therapeutic indication. It is offered as a wellness modality under physician supervision. Results vary. This post is for educational purposes only.
